When January Runs Ahead Of You - Karen's Corner - 27.01.26

People often say January drags ... that it stretches out endlessly, grey and reluctant to get going. But this year, it’s felt quite the opposite. January seems to have slipped past in a blink, carrying us with it before we quite had time to notice.
We brought in the new year here at Fossoway, co-hosting our Hogmanay party with Mum and Dad. The house was full ... friends, family, neighbours ... a joyful, noisy, slightly chaotic celebration that feels like the very best way to begin again. There was laughter, music, full glasses and that sense, just before midnight, that something is closing and something new is quietly opening too.
After that, we allowed ourselves a few days of rest before work began in earnest again the following week. And once it did, it really did. January wastes no time here.
We were straight back into the rhythm of Fossoway Stables ... animal care, admin, planning and plotting. Mapping out the year ahead for the land, the kitchen garden, our events and kids’ clubs, alongside the various new projects scheduled to launch throughout the year. January is a thinking month as much as a doing one ... lists, ideas, conversations ... all layered on top of the everyday jobs that keep everything ticking along.
Early in the month, we headed to Edinburgh for John’s first gig of the year at The Queen’s Hall ... a special night called South Side Of The Tracks where he’s asked to curate the opening concert of the season, bringing together musicians from across the UK and beyond. I was there wearing my Everything & Nothing hat, helping keep the organisational wheels turning ... sorting transport, hotels, catering and promotion. It was a fun few days of controlled chaos, and John did an incredible job pulling together what felt like one of the best nights yet. Watching something come together like that ... all the planning, the people, the music, is always a reminder of how much unseen work sits behind a single evening on stage.
The following weekend offered no real let-up, as we all - John, me, the four kids, Mum and Dad - decanted to London for a few days. There was shopping, lots of good food, and a trip to the Royal Albert Hall to see Cirque du Soleil. As ever, it was jaw-dropping ... the strength, the bendiness, the sheer commitment to doing extraordinary things with the human body. I left feeling inspired and very aware of my own physical limitations!
Back home again, another busy week followed. More work, more planning and the arrival of André the builder, who is an absolute joy. Whatever we ask of him, he smiles and says, “Anything is possible.” I like him very much. That kind of optimism is contagious.
There have also been meetings about some very exciting new projects for Everything & Nothing ... things we can’t quite talk about yet, but which feel full of promise. And a particularly satisfying trip to John’s old recording studio in the Borders, where the new owners have kindly agreed to let us dismantle some of his original soundproofing to use in the new studio we’re building here at Fossoway. One of those rare, lovely reconnections where everyone wins and history folding neatly into the future.
And finally, this past weekend has been all about celebrating Cora turning 14 which I still can’t quite believe. A shopping trip to Edinburgh (her chosen rite of passage), followed by a sleepover with eleven friends. The house was loud, full of laughter, and just a little bit wild ... exactly as it should be.
So yes, January has been full, busy, fast-moving. But it’s also felt nicely grounding and full of beginnings, reconnections and plans starting to take shape. Less about easing gently into the year, more about stepping forward and trusting that the rhythm will find us as we go.
Until next month,
Karen xx
