The Harmony Report - Issue #35 - 13.07.26

Good morning from Fossoway Stables. Every week, I go looking for stories that remind me the world is moving in the right direction not because everything is perfect, it isn't, but because amongst the noise there are always people restoring, planting, protecting and imagining better.

This week, one word kept appearing ... Stewardship.

The idea that we don't simply inherit places, we care for them, and leave them a little better than we found them.

🌍 Around the World

🇳🇿 Indigenous stewardship restoring New Zealand's forests

Across New Zealand, Māori-led conservation partnerships are continuing to restore native forests by combining traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation science. These projects are helping bring back native birds, improve river health and strengthen connections between local communities and the land.

Why it matters

Looking after nature isn't only about ecology. It's also about culture, memory and belonging.

🐟 Europe's rivers becoming more connected

River restoration projects across Europe continue to remove obsolete dams and barriers, allowing fish to migrate more freely and rivers to behave more naturally. Hundreds of barriers have now been removed as countries invest in healthier freshwater ecosystems.

Why it matters

Sometimes the best way to help nature isn't by adding something new, but by removing the things that no longer need to be there.

🌾 Farmers embracing cover crops

Across the UK, increasing numbers of farmers are planting cover crops between harvests to protect soil over winter, reduce erosion, improve biodiversity and naturally return nutrients to the land.

Why it matters

Healthy soil isn't built in a season. It's the result of thousands of small decisions that prioritise the future over immediate gain.

🌿 Closer to Home

Walking through the market garden this week, I've been reminded how much of gardening is an act of optimism ... You sow long before you harvest, you water before you see growth and you trust that what you're doing today will become visible later. Perhaps that's true of communities too.

💡 A Good Idea

Some neighbourhoods are beginning to install community fridges - simple spaces where surplus food can be shared freely rather than wasted. No membership or judgement, just neighbours helping neighbours ... it's such a beautifully practical reminder that sustainability and kindness often grow together.

🌱 Something to Try This Week

Take five minutes to notice one place you pass every day. Perhaps it's a verge, a tree or a stretch of river and pay attention to what's changed since last week. The more we notice the living world, the more naturally we begin to care for it.

From the Garden Gate

One of the things I love most about writing The Harmony Report is that it reminds me hope is rarely found in the headlines, it's usually found in somewhat quieter places. In healthier soil, in neighbours sharing food, in rivers flowing more freely and in people choosing to leave things just a little better than they found them. Perhaps that's stewardship in its simplest form, not changing the whole world overnight, just caring well for the small piece of it we've been given.

Thank you for reading.

Here's to a week of Nurture, Harmony and small Sustainable steps.

With gratitude,

The Harmony Report Team xx
