Market Garden Diaries - September 2025

There’s a certain tilt in the light now ... softer mornings, earlier dusks ... a reminder that the garden is gently shifting seasons. September is always a month of both abundance and change ... the beds are heavy with produce, but we’re also looking ahead, tidying and tucking things away as autumn edges closer.


The harvest trugs are brimming with the last of the courgettes and beans, plenty of leafy greens, carrots kale and beetroot, and the last of the potatoes to lift from the soil. Tomatoes are still ripening in the polytunnel, their deep reds and golds catching the afternoon sun. We’re also pulling in onions and garlic to dry, and there’s a steady stream of herbs for the kitchen ... bunches of parsley, thyme, and basil to brighten up simple suppers.


This is the month where the kitchen is as busy as the garden. Jars of chutney, cordials, and pickles are stacking up, the freezer is filling with blanched greens, and strings of onions and garlic are being hung to cure. It’s all about stretching the season as a way of bottling summer for the colder months ahead.


Outdoors, the work is steady and practical ... weeding and mulching beds, cutting back where growth has gone wild, and beginning to think about sowing green manures to nourish the soil through winter. There’s a lot of grass cutting and hedge tidying too ... the last big push before everything slows.


It’s a satisfying time really, eating well from the garden each day, while also preparing it for its quieter months. The wheel keeps turning, and September reminds us to gather, to savour, and to be grateful for another season of good growing.
