Holding The Festive Pause a Little Longer - Karen's Corner - 28.12.25

December has been one of those months that feels like it’s moving in two directions at once ... simultaneously full-on and busy, while also gently nudging us towards slowing down, settling in, and leaning into the season.

Our house has been a little upside down this month with work still ongoing, but we managed to get a lot done before Christmas. The living room, vestibule, hallways, main bathroom and kitchen all got a fresh lick of paint, which felt like a real milestone. John and I even snuck over to Loaf in Edinburgh to choose some new cushions for the newly painted living room ... a small thing, but such a satisfying one. Add in the Christmas decorations and suddenly our home felt cosy, sparkly, and properly festive.

There’s still plenty to do on the house, lists within lists, as always, but it finally feels like we’re making a dent. And actually, half the joy is in the planning, the imagining, the slow shaping of how we want things to feel.

December has also been full of gathering .. family parties, festive catch-ups, and our Playmakers / FossoPLAY Christmas event in the barn, which always feels like a highlight ... children, noise, laughter, and that particular brand of joyful chaos that marks the end of the year here.

John has been away touring the annual Christmas Songbook, and I joined him for the final weekend of the tour in Edinburgh. It was such a treat with late mornings, wandering the shops without a plan, discovering gorgeous brunch spots, and catching up with friends in between shows. A proper little pause in the middle of a busy month.

I also managed (miraculously!) to stay fairly on top of present buying this year, which took a huge amount of pressure off. There’s something empowering about not doing that last-minute Christmas Eve dash, isn’t there?

Work-wise, I gave myself permission to take my foot off the pedal a little this month to balance all the family and house stuff. It felt indulgent at first, but ultimately necessary. Of course, now that the end of the year is looming, I’m very aware of how much still needs finished and I’m trying not to burst the festive bubble just yet by thinking too hard about it.

As I write this, I’m sitting on the sofa under a cosy blanket, the Christmas tree lights still twinkling beside me and I’m determined to enjoy this feeling a little longer ...the warmth and the softness and the sense of having arrived somewhere calm, even briefly.

That said, Hogmanay is just around the corner, and we’ve got a party to prepare for! and then we’re straight into a busy first quarter of the year. But for now, I’m choosing to stay right here in this moment ... cozy, grateful and still.

Until next year,

Karen xx
