Market Garden Diaries - June 2025

ree

There’s a noticeable shift in the garden this month ... the air is softer, the daylight stretches well into the evening, and the soil is finally warm enough to welcome more of our tender crops.

With the last of the overnight frosts behind us, we’ve been busy moving broccoli, courgettes, squash, and lettuce into the outdoor beds. It always feels like a bit of a milestone ... a green light from the season itself, urging us to get planting, keep going, and make the most of this energetic time of year.

In the polytunnel, the rewards of earlier efforts are starting to shine. Herbs are in abundance, and the first harvests of radish, courgettes, onions, and leeks have begun. The chard is vivid and generous, and the peas are offering up their sweet little bursts of joy. The kids always comment how they love to pop a pea pod and eat them fresh from the garden and I have to agree that's the best way to enjoy the spring peas!

There’s a rhythm in the garden now ... sow, tend, harvest, repeat ... and a real sense of momentum in everything we do. I say we but who I'm really referring to is Sally, our wonderful gardener and Mum and Dad who between them, make the market garden happen. I'm just the really lucky beneficiary!

Elsewhere across the garden, we’re also picking carrots, spinach, garlic, beetroot, potatoes, and mountains of rhubarb. Rhubarb seems to have enjoyed the warm Spring and we have more than enough for crumbles, cordials, and a few jars of chutney too. If you're looking for a delicious recipe to try, I've attached our "Grandma's Rhubarb Crumble" recipe below. Let me know if you try it and what you think!

The days are long and full. There's grass to cut, borders to edge, compost to spread, and weeds that don’t take a day off. But the most exciting news? The strawberries are turning red! Not just a hint of blush full, juicy, sun-warmed fruit that tastes like summer. Not many of them are making it back to the kitchens but rather we're all picking a few everytime we pass!

There’s still plenty of work to do, but it’s the kind that feels good in the body ... the kind that makes a cool drink in the shade taste all the sweeter.

Until next time ...
