As we round out the month of June, I’m struck by how full life feels just now ... not rushed or overwhelming (though the neck injury did test that!), but full in the best possible way. Full of growth, both literal and figurative. Full of change, celebration, and a good old dose of summer optimism.
Around the estate, we’ve been deep in the seasonal cycle ... long days spent cutting grass, weeding endlessly, and nurturing the beds in the market garden. The sheer amount of green right now is wild! Everything is growing ... stretching itself towards the light ... and there’s a sense of satisfaction in (trying to!) keep up with it all.
One of the most exciting developments this month has been the launch of our seasonal veg boxes ... a new addition to the Fossoway offering and one that’s been met with such enthusiasm. Honestly, I’ve been blown away by the uptake and the kind, thoughtful feedback we’ve received already. Each box is filled to the brim with freshly harvested veg and includes a weekly recipe card featuring some of the produce inside. I love the idea that these boxes are helping to spark creativity in kitchens around the local community, and it feels really good to be sharing the fruits ... or veg! ... of our labour in this way.
We're keeping numbers small for now while we find our feet with deliveries and systems, but there are still a few spaces left if you fancy joining us. It’s new, it’s exciting, and as always, it’s a bit of a learning curve but that’s all part of it.
Another big milestone this month has been the official launch of The Sieve podcast. Three episodes are now live ... my solo introduction to the project, a joyful and energising conversation with David Flynn from The Happy Pear, and most recently, a beautifully honest episode with the brilliant musician Sam Kelly. I can’t tell you how much I’m loving this new creative challenge. Sitting down with people to have deep, reflective, and sometimes very funny conversations has been such a gift and with every recording, I feel myself settling more comfortably into the role of host. I know I’ve got lots to learn, but I’m excited to keep growing into it. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts or click this link The Sieve
Of course, the end of June also means the end of the school term and my calendar has been absolutely jam-packed with all the celebrations and ceremonies that come with that. Prom, sports days, final assemblies… the usual whirlwind! A particularly emotional one this year as Callan finishes primary school and prepares to join Cora at high school after the holidays. I can hardly believe it... that first chapter is behind us now and a new one is about to begin. People always say it but it’s all happening so fast! There’s joy in watching them step forward into their next adventures though isn’t there?
In slightly less joyful news, I managed to injure my neck earlier this month and it’s been painful and a reminder of how much we take ease of movement for granted. After a recommendation from my dad, I saw a new sports masseuse and thankfully, things are starting to improve. It's a bit of a reminder to go gently sometimes, that our bodies are always in conversation with us and that rest, healing, and support are all part of the process.
On a more cheerful note, we’ve welcomed a very special four-legged friend back to Fossoway the lovely Libby (the pony), who has returned to be ridden by Cora this summer. Libby was one of the first horses I started under saddle when I launched KA Equestrian almost 16 years ago, and she’s been in and out of our lives ever since for little working holidays. She’s such a fun, yet safe pony and it’s incredibly special to watch Cora riding her and for me (and her friends!) to be able to ride out alongside them. Cora is so lucky to have not just one but two brilliant horses to ride and learn from. I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic watching them and seeing the threads of my own horsey journey weave their way into hers.
I also squeezed in a trip to The Royal Highland Show with Cora and Isla ... a fun day out with plenty of inspiration and the usual Highland Show buzz. And we’ve had double birthday celebrations for both Mum and Dad, which, as ever, called for good food, family time, and raising a glass to the people who help make all of this possible.
So yes, June has been busy, but in a beautiful, meaningful way. I think what I’m taking from this month is a renewed appreciation for the in-between moments. For new beginnings and small returns. For stretching ourselves (like the garden!) while staying rooted in what matters most.
Thanks for being here, and for following along with all the big and small things we’re building.
Until next month,
Karen xx
